Why it exists
Levelling is a two-second step that decides how the next twenty-five seconds go. It is worth doing with a tool that turns smoothly and sits where you can reach it.
Ramped stainless base under a turned walnut cover. The mass in the handle keeps the rotation even, which matters more than it sounds — a jerky spin drags grounds rather than redistributing them.
Two to three clockwise turns, light contact only, then tamp. Keep the walnut dry; rinse the base alone and dry it before it goes back on the bench.
